Generative AI Policy

JPK : Jurnal Penelitian Kesehatan recognises that generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and similar large language models, can support researchers. This policy, based on COPE's position statement on authorship and AI tools and on ICMJE recommendations, sets out how these tools may be used by authors, reviewers, and editors.

For authors

Permitted use

  • Improving the language, grammar, and readability of the manuscript, including translation from Indonesian into English.
  • Assisting with literature searching, reference formatting, or writing analysis code, provided the authors check the results.

Not permitted

  • Listing an AI tool as an author or co-author. AI cannot meet the authorship criteria because it cannot take responsibility for the work.
  • Using AI to generate, fabricate, or alter research data, results, or patient information.
  • Using AI to create or modify images, figures, or clinical photographs, unless AI is part of the research method itself and is described in detail in the Methods section.
  • Citing AI tools as a primary source of facts, or including references generated by AI without verifying that they exist and support the statement.
  • Uploading identifiable patient or participant data into public AI tools.

Disclosure

Authors must declare any use of GenAI in a statement placed before the reference list, titled Declaration of Generative AI Use. Example:

"During the preparation of this work, the authors used [name of tool and version] to [purpose, e.g. improve the English language]. After using this tool, the authors reviewed and edited the content as needed and take full responsibility for the content of the publication."

Basic spelling and grammar checkers (e.g. the built-in checker in Microsoft Word) do not need to be declared. If no GenAI was used, no statement is needed.

Authors remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the whole manuscript. Undisclosed or inappropriate use of GenAI may lead to rejection, correction, or retraction, and will be handled under the Research Misconduct Policy.

For reviewers

  • Manuscripts under review are confidential. Reviewers must not upload a manuscript, or any part of it, to a GenAI tool, because this may breach confidentiality and the authors' rights.
  • The scientific assessment must be the reviewer's own. Reviewers may use AI only to improve the language of their own review comments, and should inform the editor if they do.

For editors

  • Editors must not upload manuscripts, review reports, or decision letters containing confidential information to GenAI tools.
  • Editorial decisions are made by people, not by AI tools.
  • The journal may use similarity-checking tools (e.g. iThenticate) and other screening tools to support integrity checks, but the results are always interpreted by an editor.

This policy will be updated as tools and international guidance develop.
